Tips on how to divide words (when writing or typing) in English
Hi, dear students! How are you doing?
Well today Im going to tackle a very squeezing point in English language: word division.
This activity aims at both pronunciation practice and introducing you into the realm of word division in English.
As a matter of fact, at the end of the explanation Im going to show you a very useful song in which you will very easily recognise the content of todays subject, although youre not writing any text at all.
Before getting into the real stuff, Id like you to do a quick repetition exercise as a matter of general warm-up.
Reality
(Richard Sanderson)
Listen and repeat after me
Ready? Let's begin..
"Met you by surprise
I didn't realize
That my life would change forever
Saw you standing there
I didn't know I'd care
There was something special in the air
Dreams are my reality
The only kind of real fantasy
Illusions are a common thing
I try to live in dreams
It seems as if it's meant to be
Dreams are my reality
A different kind of reality
I dream of loving in the night
And loving seems alright
Although it's only fantasy
(...)"
Very good, guys! Now lets see the subject of todays class itself.
When writing or typing, sometimes it is necessary to divide a word at the end of the line when there is not enough space for the complete word. This division is marked through the addition of a hyphen (-) immediately after the first part of the divided word at the end of the line.
Now look at the following tips you should take into consideration when handling word division. Its important to know that the large majority of people prefer not to divide words at all.
1- By syllable:
This means dividing the word into syllables or units of sound. For example, the word kind has one syllable, kindly has two, unkindly has three and un-kind-li-ness has four.
2- By structure:
This means dividing the word into the smaller units of meaning from which the word is built up. It may have a beginning (a prefix) such as anti-, dis-, un-, etc (as in anti-septic, dis-ap-pear,
un-able) or an ending (a suffix) such as -age, -able, -fully (as in post-age, agree-able, grate-fully).
3- By meaning:
This means deciding whether each part of the divided word can be understood or spoken so that the complete word is easily recognised from the two parts. For example, it may be a compound word made up of two different words, such as spot and light in spot-light.
All three considerations must be used to decide whether and where you can divide a word. Here are six useful rules to help you:
1- Never divide a word within a syllable.
2- Never divide an ending (a suffix) of two syllables such as -able, -ably, -fully.
3- With the exception of -ly, never divide a word so that an ending of two letters such as -ed, -er, -ic begins the next line.
4- Never divide a word so that one of the parts is a single letter.
5- Never divide a word of one syllable.
6- Never divide a word of less than five letters.
The bold dot (.):
The recommended places of word-division are given in the Dictionary for all headwords, derivatives and compounds. A bold dot (.) is printed where division is recommended, for example sep.ar.ate; ~.ly - This means that these divisions are all possible:
sep-separ-separate-
arateately

Ok, Now I think its time for us to see some words divisions in context. To do it Ive chosen a very easy song from the 80s in which the singer practically divides the words while singing the song. And to make things easier, I have even taken the dictionary way of dividing words and adapted it to the song lyrics. SO PLEASE LET'S MAKE BELIEVE all the words are at the end of the lines and you had to divide the syllables the way you've just learnt to do!
Lets begin, then.
(The lyrics goes on)
How did you like this activity? I really hope you liked it. See you next time.
