Kelly's Vegetable Garden May 09, 2010 - Update 1

Happy Mother's Day everyone. I thought I would post my first update of the year for my vegetable garden and my new container roses and flower garden. I have been getting emails about whether I remove the suckers on my tomato plants so I spent some time explaining that in the video. If you have additional questions about this, just let me know. Also, I have taken some of the suckers that I removed in the early part of the season and rooted them and transplanted them into the garden now. One quick tip, always keep your labels from your garden every year... I have a library of them and if I use a sucker to grow a plant, I just use one of the labels from years past. It's a lot easier to keep track of everything that way... I didn't really have time on this video to explain the process of growing tomatoes out of suckers but I will try to do that next week. If you are interested in getting more out of your tomatoes plants by using this technique, just email me or post something and I will get right back to you. Finally, I kind of put in an explanation of how I tie the tomatoes up using the structure of my hoop house so hopefully you get something out of that as well. I guess I need to get a better camera like Jason did so I can get a little better quality from my videos. One last thing.... If anyone can give me some suggestions on what program to use for video editing, I would greatly appreciate it. Happy Gardening everyone!!

if ur having a slug problem fill several plastic cups with beer and put them in a hole with the brim of the cup equal to the ground and spread them threw ur garden like that and they will fill up very fast

@68MOHAWKS Thanks for the tip. I actually did that very thing and it worked pretty well. It was so bad however that I had to put some slug bait out to kill them off. For now, the garden is slug free and things are doing quite well. Thanks for the post.

Im thinking about getting a pepper for drying and crushing for seasoning..what would you recommend? maybe just a red chile pepper? or cayenne?

@kharv29fan You can really do that with any kind of pepper. It really just depends on how hot you want it. Red Chile and Cayenne are both popular peppers to dehydrate and use in that way. You can also do a Google search on dehydrating peppers and you will find tons of sites that explain more about it. Good Luck. Kelly

Great video and very informative! I have just got into growing veggies and am currently using topsy turvys for pepper and theyre doin amazing! I was wondering tho, do you have to "sucker" pepper plants and pull the growths in between branches? Cant wait to see you next update!

@kharv29fan No, you don't need to prune peppers unless you plan on cloning them. Depending on how many I want to grow and especially later in the season, I will clip a few and clone them. When I do that, I grow them in my greenhouse... Kelly

@HackerGuitarist also if I could offer some advice, I am always carefull not to touch every plant in the garden in sucession, I know it's hard not to , but it will transfer any disease from plant to plant ,,especially if they are wet..all bacteria needs is a microflim of water to transfer to other plants.on the other hand, your plants look very healthy !..thanks for posting

this is one of the nicest ,cleanest "yardens" I've seen ! also your idea of pruning the lower part is dead on,it' keeps the bad bacteria from splashing onto the lower leaves... pruning all the suckers, all the time is not good for production, I don't understand why people are so determined to prune a tomato so heavily.If the plant did not need those leaves it would not grow them.
