The Miner

A song of the miner, a social role heavily embedded in Andean traditions as it was systematically employed by the Spanish on indigenous peoples; who as slaves, worked and died in mines by the millions to extract silver and gold. In modern times, mining still exists and is as dangerous as always with little oversight and compensation. The song is one of lament, desperation, but also pride, and ultimately salvation from the abyss.
