  • @CanterburyAtheists I can't exactly believe that because I can't find and information on the Richard pierce you're talking about. (Link PLZ?)

  • Dumont's design was a 1909 design, six years after Kitty Hawk. In 1909 the Wrights were demonstrating the Wright Flyer Model B that first flew in 1908. It took off under it's own power and carried two people. Dumont's design copied the wing warping control system that the Wright brothers developed. I love Dumont's design, but the Wright's invented the airplane.

  • Though only my own thoughts, I have a book of 'early flight', and it lists around 30 individuals, who could be credited with 'The First Flight'. All I can say, is that all of these individuals, no matter who ACTUALLY made the first powered flight, were great people, and we should spend less time arguing, and more time respecting. I work under the the final approach, at Tullamarine, and get to see the fruits of the efforts, of their collective genius, every day.

  • Amazing but not the inventors of the airplane. They invested a glider. The first airplane to lift on its own power was made by Santo Dumont.

  • HISTORY LESSON: The first person to build and fly a heavier-than-air machine was the New Zealander Richard Pearce who flew 9 months before The Wright Brothers. The Wright Brothers were the first people to perform what is called ‘controlled’ flight. The first person to actual build & fly a mechanised plane was Richard Pearce.

  • that is freaky. maybe it was fate... maybe he is a distant relative of the bros

  • imagine the size of the catapult to launch a Boeing 747
