I disagree. When you hear, "super power", you think of a country's military might, not its economic power.
Sure, having bad credit isn't a good thing. I never said it was. I'm not disagreeing with you on that point. My point is . . . The Chinese do not "own" us. They have just as much to lose by our inability to repay if it comes to that. It doesn't put them in a more powerful position over us.
@Vulcan750L Yea, but the reason that the United States has been considered the super power of the world since the 1950's is not because of our military, it is because of our economy...Our middle class, etc. So the countries that do not repay us have nothing to lose, because most of them have always been small economically as well, but we have always been a great country due to our economics...Thats what I'm saying. It doesnt matter if its the chinese or Great Britain, it will still hurt us.
I'm not saying I think it's okay to "stiff" the Chinese or that we should. Or that we should trash our credit standing with the rest of the world.
I'm saying that the Chinese are not in a position of superiority over us. We don't need to worry about the Chinese "owning" us. They will not send in an army and take a piece of California if we don't repay them.
If the US owes the Chinese and the US is unwilling or unable to repay it. The Chinese lose on all that money they lent us. THAT will weaken THEIR economy and THEIR credit worthiness as well. They have just as much to lose if not more because of our large debt with them. Will that affect our credit rating? Sure. Will that destroy us? Nope!
I know a lot of people with bad credit who defaulted on their credit cards an loans.
@Vulcan750L And I see youve never taken out a loan on a vehicle before, because if you have then you would know that the bank OWNS the vehicle until it is paid off...If we don't pay them back of course they will not try to invade us like repo men would lol, but the world economy doesnt just let countries take out loans and ruin other nations...if we dont pay, they may suffer, but our world reputation will be ruined, and the dollar will fall dramatically in value, and our economy would fail fast
@Vulcan750L That's not the way it works...#1: China is over played by the media and by the top dogs of the government. Is China horrible as far as human rights issues and how they treat their people, yes, but they do not pose a threat to us except for the fact that they own us!
Also, When you want to send a message to communist dictators then you have to make sure we can DEFEAT the communists, which we did not do in Vietnam! And it wasn't because of the hippies back home, either, because we stayed in the war for 10 years and still did nothing..But when we pulled out of there and all of those poor sould who were trying to get onto the last chopper failed too, well that made us look horrible and laughed at! There simply wasn't enough research about 'Nam from top people
I'm not anti-war myself, but lets face it, politics are garbage and they always have been, and will continue to be man. I'm sure your not saying invade Russia, right? And the U.S.S.R did pose a direct threat to us by threatening Nuclear bombs, so why didn't we invade them and not Vietnam? We invaded Vietnam to send a message to Russia, that's all. And the Chinese? Dude, they own us! lol We're in Billions, maybe trillions in debt to them, so why would we borrow $ from the enemy?
I'm sure Bruce has his reasons, so does every other pacifist. How are his reasons any different?
If you look at it that way, very few wars were as a result of a direct threat. Do we really want to wait till Russian or Chinese troops on landing ships are off our coasts before we do something about it?
That's because he grew up during the Vietnam era. A lot of Young people from that time period will always be anti-war activists just because of that war in particular...Lets not forget that a dude my age back in the 60's would have been sent off without his permission because the government forced them too...That war wasn't about being patriotic or protecting freedom. It was a bunch of stupid politics between the free world and the communists, but vietnam posed no direct threat to the U.S.
