Home Safety Council President Meri-K Appy talks to the TODAY Show about the importance of protecting family members, especially young children and older adults, from hot tap water dangers. Meri-K recommends installing anti-scald devices or setting the hot water heater to 120 degrees F or just below the medium setting as steps families can take to prevent scalds from hot tap water. The best way to clean the pipes is to have CLR pipe cleaner go down the pipes every now and then, and remove your showerhead and dunk it in hot vinegar and boiling water for a few hours, that will kill the micro bacteria, and make it safe at temperature safe levels. Kohler, Moen, Grohe, Hansgrohe, Rohl, Hansa, Speakman, Danze, and LeFroy Brooks with their new products have anti scald that won't excede 102 degrees, any higher it will either shut off or not activate if the temperature is danger.

I like the anti-scalding devices, but living with 120 degree hot water can get gross. Many bacteria survive at that temperature and can multiply in the pipes as the water sits cooling. It's also too cool to clean well without a lot of soap, and just barely hot enough to rinse away that soap. Unless you have dish and clothes washers with their own heaters, they'll get pretty smelly with water that cool.
