and like this, martin scorsese creates modern cinema.

@lousysmarchweather12 He never "snapped" to begin with.He planned the whorehouse massacre/freeing of Iris[who he has empathy for].The unseen object in the mirror is Betsy and it's wide open for interpretation what he is thinking as he drives off.
-
@holsterboy166 wrong. the whole point of the final scene when he looks at the unseen object in the rearview mirror is that he can snap again at any time, and who knows what he'll do next? he clearly not a good guy. just listen to what he's saying in the clip, he's racist, homphobic, violent, and seems incapable of empathy. None of these things are traits of a hero.

@lousysmarchweather12 Yeah but at the end of the movie Travis decides to take his anger and insanity and turn it toward that piece-of-shit pimp, his goon and the john in the whorehouse so he can free the preteen prostitute. He saved the girl, thus making him a good guy.

@TheBFD9000 That's the beauty of so many movies of the 70s where things weren't so cookie cutter. There was ambiguity and there wasn't the white hats and the black hats. Travis Bickle is an enigma. And it cuts in layers throughout the movie insofar as who's right and who's wrong. The end leaves us with Travis as a hero in the press and in his own mind of course he did exactly what was right.
