First Model Railroad Layout

My first attempt at an HO model railroad layout. It's a smaller layout, about 4.5 ft X 11 ft. It's a general layout, not modeled after any specific place, and I have considerable work left to do as you can see. I made several rookie mistakes along the way, I try to highlight some of them in this video. A big shout out to my boy Al "MonsterRailroad" Mayo, whose video tips helped me considerably with my work. My 15 and 4 year old boys also help out on the layout and they enjoy model railroading, so it can also be a good family activity.

Mate your grassy areas by your track look real good!!

Yeah Big Al is very good. Hes got plenty of good ideas and is always keen to show them off. I cant wait to start my layout, im looking forward to it.

Keep up the hard work. I agree with your weathering looking over the top, but still your techniqure is good.

Thanks Anderson. I think a 6X10 would be a nice size, it would leave more possible space for buildings etc, in the center.

Does Big Al sell boxcars with graffiti and weathering? where did you get the graffiti decals... try dullcote on the first one you weathered... comes in a spraycan, it's basically a dull clearcote, not gloss or satin, but matte... I use a similar product on Minis for wargaming, to seal them once done, and make them not shiny, then I redo some details that I want to shine, like edges of metal and swords and such... the first one looked great to me. love the graffiti! the spray I use is by Valspar

Have you considered building some kind of structure to hide that exposed terminal block at 1:28? Or is that not possible?

I had a 8 by 14 foot plan by Lynn Wescott I built once. It was fun. You can run 2 trains on it, with no conflict.

Your looking good so far, LIke the looks of the scenery, and those old weathered buildings do look pretty darn good.

I hope I can pull off that old beat down look on a few things I want to weather up.

Your layout looks good so far, I like that Oil storage kit bash and the other buildings you weathered, you should make a few of them up and ebay them off.
