As in all analogies made about the atonement, they are backed up with the scriptures. This particular account is not a parable spoken of by the Lord but it illustrates the covenant that both men and women make. The last day or the final day of judgment equates to us giving an account for our lives. We will ALL fall short when we reach this final day of judgment. Only they who have made a covenant with the master will enter there in... but this does not remove us from our stewardship and responsibility.
The Lord gave us this in parables such as the "Parable of the 10 virgins," the "Parable of the Laborer in the Vineyard" and also the "Parable of the Talents."
All suggest improving our time while on this earth and being prepared. None have suggested positive outcomes for those who were unproductive "unrighteous stewards" of their time, slothful servants or unwise members of his kingdom. To the contrary, he spoke of "death and hell" for those who would not put forth an effort while members of his fold.

Forsaking ones sins and sinning no more was not a suggestion from the Lord but a commandment. We are not "saved in our sins" but we may be saved "from our sins" if we truly repent from them and do as the savior commanded us: (Compare John 5: 14)
The power of God unto forgiveness and the grace of God is sufficient for his children for those who repent and come unto him. (Acts 17:30)
HE will be merciful to those who repent and cease to sin and only to they who covenant to "sin no more" is this possible. Hebrews 8:12-13)

The new covenant did not remove the responsibility of our sins from WE that commit them. The new covenant did not involve slothfulness or laziness on our parts. God will not do everything for us. We must repent of ALL of our sins and become a saint unto God. (Romans 16:2 and Ephesians 5:1-21 respectively)

You are right about sin. We have to repent of our sins to have the Spirit with us. BTW, I had doubts about JS being a prophet and have been reading the Book of Mormon. I believe the Book of Mormon to be the word of God.

@tauren2005 - receiving a witness of the spirit is how one may know the truth. My favorite verse in the Bible on that matter is in 1 John 5:5-6 ... the Holy Spirit has but one function... to testify of truth and bear witness. I find that as we listen to that still, small voice and put our trust more in God, one may know the truth of ALL things free from the persuasions of men.

Paul was having a difficult time converting Jews and Jew influenced Gentiles living in all parts of that land. (Including in Rome) The old ways of the "law of Moses" continued to frustrate the preachings which Christ had taught.

The Law of Moses was a law of works and tasks.

Allowing these folks to put more trust in the Lord (the promised Messiah) was a daunting task because they had lived the law of Moses for centuries but works are and always would still be important: (See James Chapter 2)

When you read (in context) this and any of the verses I suggested, it opens ones understanding as to the reasons why Paul has certain words to speak and why he puts more emphasis on the "grace" through which we are saved.

One must also know the audience he is writing to, read a few verses before and even some after in order to get a clearer picture.

A lens can do one of two things: magnify an image until it is more like a microscope or one may use a telescope as to see all of it.
