Fez (Morocco) is one of the few places is the world where draw-looms are still in current use. They are the conservatory of a precious savoir-faire. This short video takes us into « Dar al tiraz », the workshop of Sy Hassan, who has designed and constructed several draw looms with the same materials and techniques as those used in the olden times. The workshop is specialised in the handweaving of figured fabrics, in particular lampases whose production had disappeared from Fez a century ago. All the fabrics produced are the original creations of Sy Hassan who finds his inspiration in the mediaeval textiles of Spain and Northern Africa in particular.
