While exploring in the Japanese countryside I met a nice old man who was busy harvesting sweet potatoes. These are called "satsumaimo" (imo means potato) in Japan where they once served as a backup staple in case of failure of the primary rice crop.

  • Was it hard to learn Japanese?

  • @ScopedOUT2 Very hard... I still speak Japanese very poorly and struggle daily to get by. ~Kurt :-)

  • what did you give him?

  • Hello Th33k, I gave this man a piece of old fashioned Japanese candy called "kanro". The candy has a honey taste (to me at least) which I really like. I always like to have some old-fashioned sweets on hand to brighten my walks and share with those I meet. As you may know, gift giving is a fun and important part of life in Japan. -Kurt :-)
