Frankie Howerd at the Oxford Union (pt.1 of FOUR) - '90 HQ

After nearly forty years in the business, Frankie suddenly found himself popular with a whole new YOUNG audience - courtesy of a series of post-ironic TEE-SHIRTS with his catch-phrases on!

Whilst driving a hack in the Seventies, I had Francis as a celebrity fare and - unaware of his paranoia - I casually remarked I hadn't seen him on TV in a while. I thought he was going to burst into TEARS.

Of course to the public, Frankie's career was CONTINUOUS - but when your agent hasn't rung you in a YEAR...

Nevertheless - this shows that, fifteen years later - he still HAD it. All of his ooohs and stumbles were SCRIPTED - and Mr Howerd knew EXACTLY how to TIME them.

A true comic genius.

I saw this on tv first and my impression was --"What a slow audience". Maybe they filmed the confused ones in the audience.

He was so nervous that night though followed it through beautifully. He was a comic genius, influenced us all who were fortunate to witness his wit, banter at the time to have a sense of humour and laugh no matter what life throws. RIP Francis, you will alway's be remembered in our hearts forever...
