One of the sayings we have up here goes like this: "We don't give a damn how they do it Outside!" We liked being different than anywhere else, but lately, Alaska's become a lot like everywhere else - at least in the places that are connected to the road system. Anchorage now has every box store that's ever blighted the generic, souless suburbs of America - heck we've even got 2 Walmarts with a third one on the way. Even Sarah Palin's hometown, Wasilla, has been 'Malled' into indistinction. Yup, yup, we've ended up paying an awfully high price for cheap underwear.
Now, whenever I start feeling bad about the way things once were...I hit the road and visit the REAL ALASKA. It's just 30 miles or so north of Anchorage.
I documented one of my trips for a performance art piece I did a few years ago at the OUT NORTH Theater. It was called...Souvenirs from Butte.
This is a little dated. Rhonda's Cafe closed down years ago. Still It's a nice picture of an (in)famous place.
