Democracy evolves the opposing direction. Because everyone only does things for themselves, they will always vote for things which best benefit them. So groups of people who understand how to take advantage of this will always jump to the top of the food chain. Example: The media have shown, time and time again, that they can easily affect public perceptions. People are stupid. Of course, being a Republic didn't stop that from happening, but... oh well.

And yes, America is a Republic.
