Sir Arthur Seymour Sullivan MVO (13 May 1842 - 22 November 1900) was an English composer, of Irish and Italian descent, best known for his operatic collaborations with librettist W. S. Gilbert, including such continually popular works as H.M.S. Pinafore, The Pirates of Penzance, and The Mikado.
Ouverture in C "In Memoriam" (1866)
City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra conducted by Sir Vivian Dunn
Very nice. Never heard this piece before. Of course Sullivan also wrote
"the Lost Chord".
My grandfather was also around during Sullivan's life. Sometimes history
is just around the corner.
Tnx for the melodious post.

This has always been my favourite recording of this piece, especially the way the main theme is introduced at the finale (1:00) - buildup, crescendo, drumroll, *pause* BAM! - full orchestra with organ. Gets me every time!

Thank you for posting this. For me this is one of those special compositions that somehow affects me very deeply and usually have to brush away the tears at the end.
