Paddy Reilly and Jmmy Crowley singing The Green Island. written by Jimmy Crowley.

THE GREEN ISLAND
(Jimmy Crowley)

Nobody knows the answers,
As the dark clouds keep rolling each day
Casting a shadow upon us,
From Antrim to sweet Bantry Bay
In their droves all the people are leaving, sure,
'Tis worse than the black forty-four
When they sailed away over the ocean,
With their dreams and their lonely sea stores

Chorus:

What a legacy, such a tragedy,
Thousands are sailing good bye
The land of the eagle is calling,
As we leave the Green Island, good bye

And it's only six hours to Boston,
And if you serve your time on the plane
In no time at all you're a chippie,
As good as the best at the game
In Sally O'Brien's we'll be dancing,
But we'll go back someday maybe when
The blue moon it hangs over Durse,
And the river runs up Spancil Hill

Chorus:

What a legacy, such a tragedy,
Thousands are sailing good bye
The land of the eagle is calling,
As we leave the Green Island, good bye

Is this a good time to remember
The brave men and women who died
Whose vision is misrepresented
By shadows who flicker and hide
They dish out their perks and their pensions,
While the big fell turns in his grave
To see the bright diamonds and jewels,
Cast down the cold crest of a wave

Chorus:
What a legacy, such a tragedy,
Thousands are sailing good bye
One last, long look cast behind us,
As they bid the Green Island good bye
As they bid the Green Island good bye.

  • Paddy Reilly, what a singer, and a great gentleman. Have had the good fortune to spend an evening with Paddy in 2006, that night will live long in the memory! Just the two of us over a few pints which eventually became a few songs at the end of the night. A gentleman who still speaks fondly of his close friendship with Luke Kelly.

  • Wonderful wonderful !

  • Nice 1

  • my mum had the good fortune to come from Bantry bay, as a child i spent many a summer there and if i was ever fortunate enough to be rich that is where i would make my home, beautiful place :o)

  • @aodchain He surely is. I see him every once in awhile. He comes to Jefferson

City, Missouri, usually Mairtin De Cogain, adn they'll play a small gig at Paddy Malone's Pub. He's incredibly gracious and encouraging. I am incredibly proud to have played tunes and songs with him.

  • @josparkes The phrase you're looking for is "humble sea stores." Food which wouldn't spoil over the long passage. Beans, bacon and the like.

  • Sadly This could be Number 1 if it was released at this time. What a story which is now coming around again.

  • Beautiful Song. Jimmy Crowley is so underestimated. One of our best ever song writers.

  • What are humbles ?

  • Fabulous !
