He was wearing a ring in which there was a strong magnet to detect the steel needle thingy and when he ran his hand through the thingy, if he felt no attraction to the metal then its safe to crush the bag. The wood is used to hold down the rod so that the steel rod would not be attracted by the magnet in the ring. (then the magic would fail) All he needed to do was feel the whether there was any attraction or not!:D
