Warning - generally boring unless you're there. The trains that are connected to the ship do not tow them. The ship moves on its own power, and the train engines keep the ship centered to keep it from hitting the sides. The lanes are bi-directional, and no pumps are used to transfer the water. All the water moves from one lock to the next by pure gravity, fed by the lakes and rivers. The price per ship to transit the entire canal? They announced prices from $120k to $190k. Talk about a high-priced toll way.
