Originally broadcast July 10, 1938

This is from a memorial broadcast honoring George Gershwin on the eve of the first anniversary of the composer's premature death on July 11, 1937. The broadcast starred Jane Froman, Felix Knight, Sonny Schuyler and the Victor Salon Group, conducted by Nathaniel Shilkret. The concert was later released on 78 rpm records.

Jane Froman (1907 - 1980) was an outstanding singer with a strong melodious voice and excellent phrasing. She was most active in the 1930s and 1940s. Much formal training, attended University of Missouri and Cincinatti Conservatory of Music. In early years sang over WLW radio in Cincinnati. To Chicago several months with Paul Whiteman. Sustaining radio show on NBC from Chicago, also played clubs there. To New York radio, by 1934 well established. In Broadway musicals "Ziegfeld Follies of 1934", "Keep Off the Grass" (1940), "Artists and Models" (1943) and 1942 vaudeville show "Laugh, Town, Laugh" with Ed Wynn. In movies "Star Over Broadway" (1935) and "Radio City Revels" (1938). On Radio shows "The Seven Star Review" early 1934, "Bromo Seltzer Hour" late 1934-35., "Pontiac Show" 1935, 1937 summer "Jello Show", 1939 show with Jan Peerce and Erno Rapee Orchestra, Star Theatre 1942. Also guest spots on various shows. Continued to play clubs in later 1930s and 1940s. Also many recordings made.

Miss Froman was seriously injured February 1943 in Lisbon plane crash, with group of of show business volunteers to entertain overseas troops. Broke bones, and serious leg damage required many operations through the years. In November 1943 managed to appear in Broadway Musical "Artists and Models"; show later folded after 28 performances. Career often interrupted for treatment of injury. In 1945 played for New York's Copacabana, later U.S.O. tour. Career waned. Comeback with records and club dates early 1950s a tribute to her courage and determination. 1952 movie of her life "With a Song in My Heart". Outstanding musical, with Susan Hayward brilliantly playing role of Miss Froman. Jane in Good voice on soundtrack

  • Very enjoyable song. Melody is just as bittersweet as the lyrics. ...Can't think of a Gershwin song I'd not like.
