The main day of the MunMaak Graham City to Coast Rally 2010 will kick off with the cars assembling around 8:30AM on the CentralWorld plaza so its an early start, for me a quick BTS ride to Chit Lom and a walk up to the Centara Grand where the array of be-stickered exotica are being warmed up in the parc ferme ready for the impending days action. From the catacomb car park of the hotel its a short stretch round to the vast deck at CentralWorld where a temporary paddock has been set up inside a barrier-lined perimeter. Here the cars will form up, breakfast eaten, coffee consumed and instructions given out before the brightly-coloured convoy forms up before rolling out into the citys Saturday morning traffic, with a police escort to head for Khao Yai, the opening leg of the days 400-odd kilometer trip to the seaside resort of Pattaya.

On the spacious paved plaza the cars start to creep in, forming up in two neat lines. Its a diverse array of European and Japanese brands, with the former comfortably holding sway. Ferrari is represented by two F430 coupés, one is finished in bright rosso corsa the other is in grigio metallico and clad with Scuderia-style stripes up-over-bonnet-full-length-stripes. Maranello isnt the only Italy marque on show though, there is a bright-orange Murciélago from the SantAgate Bolognese stable while Modena is also on the scrubbed paving thanks to beautiful metallic dark blue Maserati Coupé which thankfully has see its flowing Pininfarina lines spared the Bangkok customisers hand. There are several Porsches in attendance from a pretty 911 Targa wearing full length stripes, a red 911 coupé, a pair of a bright white Caymans, one standard, one wearing a loud styling kit, and an also-kitted Cayenne. Japan is well represented by the muscular, angular Nissan GT-R; there are a trio of these big machines with their unmistakable snouts and chunky design language that slices along sharp flanks and wraps round to a slab backend with twin round taillights clusters; while the rising sun is furthered here by a dark Lexus SC430. The strictly niche Lotus brand is surprisingly strongly in evidence with two later-series Esprits, one a 300 Sport, complimented by two Elises. All four cars are finished in lurid-colours, the Esprits in yellow and red, one Elise is a glowing green while the other in a jazzy Union Jack-inspired livery that celebrates a GT3 championship win by the Norkfolk, UK-based marque in 2006.

Flat-black seems as in-fashion in Bangkok as anywhere else in the world this year, and several cars are presented in this matt finish, including a Jaguar S-Type R, the special limited-edition 400bhp 4.2-litre supercharged machine tweaked by the factory. As well as Porsche, more German badging comes in the form off a pair of Audi TTs, one the curvy original and one a current-generation car, another to boast a flat-black finish, and dressed up to mimic the R8 sports car, while a full-blown yellow R8 also rolls in. The final member of the flat-black club this morning is a moody Mercedes-Benz SL, while a glossy-black SLK doubles up the three pointed stars turn-out. Other attendees on the deck include an Aston Martin V8 Vantage, BMW M3 and a highly tuned-up Subaru Impreza decked out in the blue, white and orange splash of Repsol .

The cars grunt their way in off Rachadamri Road and up the access ramp into the paddock, forming up side by side along the deck, quickly attracting a crowd of early-morning shoppers to gaze at the rows of gleaming exotica, as well no doubt the array of tall, slim pretties that line-up in front of the cars. A buffet breakfast is served by Berts, one of the restaurants embedded into the central world complex that opens out onto the plaza, while an excellent coffee comes courtesy of CoffeeWORLD one of the tours sponsors who have set up coffee machines in the shadow of the towering glass frontage of CentralWorld. In amongst the modern metal on show a word must be passed on the eye-catching 1963 Lincoln Continental that CoffeeWORLD has brought to the mornings festivities. With huge proportions, acres of highly polished chrome, a glossy black paint finish, imperious and so-arrogant square cut lines, massive suicide doors, and with an opulent lustrous white leather interior, the Continental dominates the deck, just as regal now as it was when long-gone U.S. Presidents were ushered around the streets of Washington half a century ago by this iconic American machine.

Everthing is pretty loud about MunMaak and lot least the bright-green dedicated tour t-shits that are being worn by the crews. The tour is introduced, instructions are given out, there is a group photo and the crowd-pleasing pretties identically-clad in black tops, demin shorts, and balance-defying platform heels, line up to wave the cars off.
