Invented by C.W. McCutchen in 1964, the Charybdis (from Greek mythology of a powerful whirlpool off the Sicilian coast) was designed after studying the flight characteristics of the maple seed falling from the tree. This design was scaled up from the .010 engine size to use the Cox .049 engine. The main wing uses a simple Clarke Y airfoil with 3" chord 36" long. The stab is 18" long and set at -5 degree incidence to the wing. The counterbalance sets the CG at about 1/4" ahead of the leading edge and keeps the wing level by centrifugal force.
Flights last a couple minutes on 1/2oz of fuel and then goes into auto rotation once the engine quits allowing a gentle descent back to earth. Monocopter

  • aww man, this didn't show up in my "Monocopter" search engine feed because the word was never mentioned.

Great video, i'm glad i got to see it.

  • Controlling position in the wind is hard.

  • Autorotation and everything. I think, you sir, have won.

  • And I thought ive seen everything. Thats one batshit crazy contraption man. I wonder if you can somehow make it controllable. The gopro on it takes the cake.

  • That is just too cool :-)

  • Great job and good thinking. I like folks who look back on History and then try to improve the designs, instead of re-inventing. Looks like you nailed it. Now to be able to aim the camera in flight, is your next challenge! :-) Great stuff. ~NightFlyyer~

  • Hey Don, that was awesome got real dizzy watching lol. Good job.

    Jerry.

  • You guys are all crazy LOL Walter, is there anything you won't put a gopro on? ;-)

  • Us guys and our flying machines that has a wow factor at the field and a WHAT IS IT FACTOR too

  • What's kind of cool is seeing the amount of flex and warping when shown in slow motion. Kind of make you think and wonder about how your RC wings are reacting to the different stresses during flight.
