The Normans, Vikings, Old English etc all came to Ireland but eventually became Irish themselves. But the Ulster people (Protestants especially) remain a distinct and different identity still to this day.
But lets forget about all that REAL FACT & HISTORY eh? Today the people of Northern Ireland wish to remain BRITISH. By democratic means, the MAJORITY chooses to do so. You aren't against democracy are you?
Again, you have no right to tell people what their nationality is.
Ulster used to comprise of 13 counties in total. But like France, Poland etc the geography down the centuries has changed but the ancient name remains. You know little when you say most aspects of Ulster Protestant culture are drawn from Irish culture, wrong again. Most if not all aspects are drawn from Scottish culture, hence the tag Ulster Scots.
The people of Ulster have remained a separate identity for over 1000 years while all others have became Irish.
@GaraGambini ulster is made up of 9 counties 6 in northern ireland 3 in the 26 counties and no part of the island of ireland is british most aspects of ulster protestant culture are drawn from irish culture before you say im some clueless free stater my mother is from co down
What you fail to realise is that the ONLY people who have a say on their choice of nationality is them. The Good Friday Agreement states that the ONLY people who will determine the national status of Northern Ireland is the people of Northern Ireland.
You have no right to tell the Ulster Protestants what they are, only they can decide. Canadians live in North America but do they call themselves American?
Ulster (as you call it) is British FACT, just accept it don't bomb it!
@GaraGambini ulster protestants are irish whether they like it or not and all the union jack waving orange sashes or queen worshiping wont change that. most irish understand them a lot more than any english person .there isn't really any such thing as british its just another word for english. most people in britain or as you might call it the mainland now identify themselves as english scottish or welsh not british
Perhaps if we hadn't been told by the Irish that we don't belong here or that we should go home to Scotland or that we weren't Irish then perhaps we'd have been more willing to accept our Irishness.
We haven't been allowed to be Irish! The when the glorious IRA started to murder women & children, we certainly didn't want to be identified with such actions.
1100ad - 2011ad - Still British, still unbowed and unbroken and still a separate identity. No Surrender!
in the words of the great irish patriot and protestant thomas davis in advice to his fellow protestants ACCEPT YOU ARE PART OF THE IRISH NATION AND YOU WILL BE ACCEPTED AS PART OF THE IRISH NATION
