"Doc Kearns was a very funny guy. He used to drink a lot and throw all the money away. He never had no money. Never had nothing. After a fight he'd say, "I bet on this fight that you'd knock him out in 1 round." He would lie to me all the time. He was handling all the money and the result of it is we never had no money. He got the money and he spent the money and he said he bet it on fights and this and that and we never had any money and that's the reason we broke up."

It's long been the story, but I'm not totally convinced that an actual bet on a 1st round KO was made by Doc Kearns. In fact, Dempsey himself seemed to dispute Kearns' story about the bet on the knockout and thus it becomes a he said/he said type of thing with Dempsey's story against Kearns'.

I'll see if I can find a quote or two from Dempsey where he speaks on it in one of these books I have.

but I've read in various places that the reason jack dempsey's trainer betted on a 1st round KO vs willard was because he wrapped dempsey's hands in plaster of paris, like margarito done last year..

Jack Dempsey very tough guy look at his story if u dont beleive me he went through alot true rags to riches story the first aggressive force i find him to be overated would he beat jack johnson?no Jack johnson woulda bin too big and too skilled for the mauler Dempsey was a tough guy thats all i can say have hard time mentioning him in top tens only one i can really rank him over is marciano who is very overated himself
