Kaliningrad (Russian: Калининград, German: Königsberg, Polish: Królewiec, Prussian:Twānksta) is a seaport and the administrative center of Kaliningrad Oblast, the Russian exclave between Poland and Lithuania on the Baltic Sea. The territory, the northern part of the former East Prussia, borders on NATO and EU members Poland and Lithuania, and is geographically separated from the rest of Russia.

Originally named Königsberg, the Prussian and German town had been founded in 1255, and was then largely destroyed during World War II. Its ruins were occupied by the Soviet Army in 1945 and it was renamed Kaliningrad in 1946 in honour of Mikhail Kalinin. The former Russian name was Kyonisberg (Кёнисберг).

Hi Ersatzeilanfrage, it's not per definition an ugly city but yes, it has seen better days. It's not only the Russians to blame for the city as it is now, the British and American bombed the city to pieces, just like they've done with other German cities.

@tommi59tk Elbing!! My grandmother had friends there before the war! It is located I believe near (I do not know the Pokish names...sorry) Allenstein or Danzig/Gdansk in what used to be East Prussia. I have always wanted to go to Poland. My wife is from Breslau/Wroclaw in Silesia. Tommi you seem to be a wonderful person! One day i hope to meet you. How do you say "Hello" and Goodbye in Polish? I only know Englisch, German and a little Russian. Have a good day!

@tommi59tk Yes, Tommi..I do understand how the Polish feel about Nazis. My grandfather was murdered by the Nazis in 1944. He was on General Staff and was in on plot to kill Hitler (20. Juli 1944). I believe it was known as "Operation Walkure" (Valkyrie). He knew von Stauffenberg and the others he hated Hitler and the Party. As a German and human being, I am truly so very sorry for what the Nazis put your country (and others) through! Now our two peoples are friends-let us keep it that way!
