John Huston filmed this documentary while serving with the U.S. Army Photographic Unit during World War II. Due to the fact that it dealt (unflinchingly) with what we now refer to as post-traumatic stress disorder, Army brass took one look at it and pulled it from circulation. It remained out of circulation for nearly thirty-five years until President Carter ordered that it be released.
Policy of censorship, not the freedom of the brave individuals and participants that clearly allowed and even promoted Let There Be Lights' viewing. A disgrace, and though such a film might be shown in the modern world, the deceit has only become more elaborate rather than abolished in such grave incidents that occur perhaps even more amorally through foreign policy today.
