Hidden loop of music in Mario Kart 64!

To play the music in game, you've got to wait 50 minutes (approx.) on the results screen after a race.

Crazy, huh? That's what I told my brother when he told me about this!
(Credit for finding the tune goes to him)

Alright, now I'm pretty sure this was stuck in there on purpose. It plays after exactly 64 loops of the "normal" tune. That is just too darned significant to be coincidental, don't you think? That Nintendo! They're just so canny, aren't they?

Hey, notice a lot of people coming on in, "NintendoEverything"?

Cool~

I like little doodads like this as much as the next guy, but I got to thinking it's probably a coding error of some sort. Take a listen to how it goes: in this video I play the regular loop once, it lasts around 50 seconds, the hidden loop seems to last a lot longer, but it's really just repeating itself twice - at about 50 seconds each.

That may be neat and all, but so what, right? Well, consider the official CD release which for this piece plays the normal loop (A) twice, and the then the hidden loop (B), twice.

So, in-game, it likely was supposed to be a "AABBAABB..." affair and for whatever reason, the second loop got messed up and only did it's "BB" bit about 50 minutes down the line.

Still, just conjecture and open to speculation, but I think it's a little too complex and fits in perfectly as a complement to the regular loop making it great for a "A/B" (or rather "AA/BB") kinda set up, rather than being intended as hidden. So, I'm thinking some programmer slipped up, here.

This has always been one of my favorite tracks in the game, just for how different and calm it was - I guess that programmer inadvertently made it more interesting years down the line, at least!

  • I remember when I was 7, and I was listening to this because I LOVED this music, until this came up and I was like, "wtf?" I thought my game broke from playing this music too long XD

  • All these years of playing....and I find another thing new. Cool.

  • But that's not a hidden song. It's just the complete song of the results, just that not everyone stick a lot of time in this screen, normally you just keep going cause you're really excited for winning x)

  • Ok so, I actually tried this out on my 3ds. I thought @solosoloblackdude 's theory, because if you add it up (loop just under one minute, 50 minutes as compared to 64 loops) it was pretty good. I played a Mushroom Cup Grand Prix and after completing Shy Guy bazaar, didn't press a button. Waited for 7 loops. Nothing. Waited for 7 laps. Nothing. By that time I already took 7 minutes. I didn't realize it could also be with the number 3, so maybe I could try this out again another time with 7x3?

  • I wonder if this is in Mario Kart 7 as well.

  • @solosoloblackdude how do you type like that?

  • I just tried this today

    MY LIFE IS COMPLETE

  • This was my first game ever

How the hell did I never find this

  • Maybe on Mariokart 7 it's 59 loops. Cuz, y'know, 3D is 59 in hexadecimal.

  • Jazz wins

  • @solosoloblackdude maybe on mk7 its 7 loops or 7x3 21 loops

  • @Dogolife i looked this up because i wanted to compare the result screen song. the base is the exact same.
