This is what RTTY looks like on an oscilloscope. RTTY stands for Radio TeleTYpe, a method of sending typed characters over the radio. It works by changing the carrier wave between 2 frequencies (mark and space). The top line is voltage vs. time, the middle line is instantaneous frequency vs. time, and the bottom pattern is what it would look like if plotted as a radio fax.

  • Thanks for this video. It brought back memories of all the hours I used to spend listening to RTTY on the shortwaves. Equipment used was, and still is, a Siemens T100 teletypewriter, a HAL ST-6 T.U. and a home-made oscillograph. It's a wonder I still have any hearing left!
