The Duke University team of Wei Li, Arnav Mehta and Aaron Wise received the highest award at an international math competition by finding a solution for how to most efficiently board an airplane. In competitions sponsored by the Consortium for Mathematics and Its Applications, only 18 out of 1,222 teams received the highest designation of "outstanding". Duke teams led the competition with four "outstanding" awards, including the team of juniors Li, Mehta and Wise. Teams were given 96 hours to propose mathematically rigorous answers to problems such as, how to best divide up voting districts or how to most efficiently board an airplane.

  • is it MCM?

  • interesting - one could copy the same approach to simulating all manner of "business activities"

  • Videos like this restore my faith in humanity. Not to say that it's important to figure out a problem like this one, but knowing that people smart enough to think things through as they did are living right now... I don't know. It comforts me.
