Every year since 1949, Saks Fifth Avenue's holiday windows have delighted children and adults alike, and this year will be no exception. Inspired by Saks Fifth Avenue's new children's holiday book, A Flake Like Mike, written by Emmy-award-winning Simpsons writer Mike Reiss and illustrated by artist Chris Capuozzo. The theme of the windows is individuality, and unique mechanical snowflakes with human characteristics will captivate shoppers who come to see the story of "Snowflake City."
The Snowflake Spectacular illuminated Fifth Avenue with its brilliant LED-light show choreographed to a modern version of "Carol of the Bells" the building features 72,000 energy efficient lights and 50 decorative snowflakes reaching 10 stories high.
The other windows feature one-of-a-kind dresses adorned with CRYSTALLIZED ™ -Swarovski Elements. The specially commissioned gowns took over 12 weeks to create and reflect over 500 hours of hand embroidery with over 1,000 types of crystals. The dresses were designed by fashion icons including: Carolina Herrera, Michael Kors, Ralph Lauren, Zac Posen, and Oscar de la Renta. In addition to these exclusive pieces, windows feature over 10 million precision-cut CRYSTALLIZED™ - Swarovski Elements.
To celebrate the unveiling, fashion designer Tory Burch joined Steve Sadove, Chairman and CEO of Saks Fifth Avenue, to turn on the lights. Prior to the window unveiling, guests were entertained on Fifth Avenue by a special Nutcracker Ballet performance by students of the renowned Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School at the American Ballet Theatre. Marlo Thomas, National Outreach Director for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital®, attended the event with four patients in celebration of Saks Fifth Avenue's support of the fifth annual St. Jude Thanks and Giving® Campaign.
Saks Fifth Avenue will also proudly continue its tradition of supporting St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in partnership with HarperCollins to be the exclusive book distributor of A Flake Like Mike. Saks will donate $2 from every book sold at its stores and online nationwide to the 2008 St. Jude Thanks and Giving campaign. To date, Saks has helped raise over one million dollars for St. Jude and looks forward to growing that number this year.
