I think silent film is only an acquired taste because we're spoiled by sound. I'm not one of those people who believes that film has gone downhill, I think all eras have their greats, but the silent era deserves far more attenton. Two of my favorites are probably Abel Gance's "J'accuse", and, of course, King Vidor's "The Crowd" (with special mention to Sunrise by F.W. Murnau. Oh, and the final scenes of Safety Last rival anything suspenseful in the history of cinema.)
