In this video Joe shows us how to use the hitch mounted Goalpost from Thule which is perfect for transporting work related equipment or sporting gear like kayaks. Thule designed this rear mounted load bar to allow you to carry loads longer than your truck bed or on top of your SUV. It works in any 2 inch receiver hitch and is easily adjustable to different heights. The bar features two load stops to provide lateral load support.

This part will only fit 2 inch hitches. A few nice points about the goal post is the easy height adjustment due to its telescoping design that fits both trucks or SUVs. The parts include the 15 inch wide Thule load bar for alignment of water sport carriers and includes two load stops. It does provide lateral support and is adjustable to the length of the load bar. This is constructed of high strength steel for durability and is painted in Thules twin coat process. We will install it on the SUV we have here and show you a typical application. Instead of using a conventional hitch pin, it uses Thules anti-sway technology which has a bolt instead of a pin. When installed, it essentially makes the goalpost one with the vehicle. Also this will work with Thules locking pin.

Next I will show you how to adjust it, it is pretty simple you just pull out the pin and raise the goalpost to the height you need it at and reset the pin. Now we are going to install a kayak to give you an idea of the size and shape, which may require an extra set of hands. Now that we have our kayak on, we will adjust the load stops to keep it stable. Once you have the load situated the way you want it, it is a good time to install the anti-sway straps to keep things from moving around. First you want to find the attachment point behind your bumper where you can attach your hook to. A lot of vehicles have tie down hooks on both sides, but you do want to attach to something metal definitely not plastic. Take your other half of the strap which will go through this hole right here. Now take your excess and wind it up and there is a handy strap to keep things from flapping around. Now repeat for the other side. At this point your goalpost is ready to go with the exception of tightening down your load with straps or tie-downs. There you have it for part number TH997, the Goalpost cargo carrier from Thule.
