They did not go into South Africa. They were helping them by helping UNITA who were fighting the Cubans and the Angolan army alongside the South African army. The Cubans and the Angolan army defeated South Africa at Cuito Cuanavale in August 1988 and this is acknowledged there as decisive in ending Apartheid.
