David Spark reporting for Riverbed at Interop '09, Las Vegas, NV.

Throughout the first two days at Interop, customers have been presenting at Riverbed's booth, giving real world stories of how their business has changed since deploying Riverbed WAN optimization devices.

One such presentation was given by Rahul Arya, Manager, Corporate Network Group, for The Depository Trust and Clearing Corporation (DTCC). The DTCC is the largest financial post-trade infrastructure organization. They clear every trade after the trade has occurred. The DTCC processes the trade to make sure all parties are credited. They have 3,000 globally dispersed employees and deal with millions of transactions, equaling $1.7 trillion transactions every single day.

A few years ago they realized they needed a WAN optimization solution. They had globally dispersed architectures, DWDM and OC-48 links between data centers for backup and replication, and MPLS T3 links between data centers and remote offices.

DTCC looked and tested many devices, but settled on Riverbed who they see not as a vendor, but rather rely on as a strategic business partner. They look to Riverbed to help them achieve business objectives such as addressing slow application response times and latency at remote offices.

DTCC uses Riverbed's Cascade (watch video), giving them a lot of visibility into trade traffic, and alerting them if there's a trade anomaly.

The results for DTCC were outstanding, said Arya. They improved application response times by 60%. HTTP Web page access reduced from 1 minute to 3 seconds. WAN efficiency increased by 2.3x. All of this spilled into huge IT expenditure cost savings of $825K within first year.

Watch my follow up interview with Arya where I ask him about how this benefited the entire enterprise.
