Another good episode. Just one thing - I think it has been mentioned before, but someone should tell the band to keep a lid on it during the segment for the most part.

Manga vs American Comics. Not a bad idea :)

No painted covers. The colors are usually dark and muddy, the figures are stiff and lifeless, and the rendering is sketchy. Either be as good as Alex Ross, or forget it.
Great cover comparison, thanks.

I agree!
That being said, there were alot of great painters in the 60s and 70s. Just look at the Gold Key and Marvel Magazines.

If you can make a sculpt out of it, it's a good composition. Also, just a few colors that go together well is key. Contrast is good - dark and light (don't be afraid of the dark!). Negative (empty) space is as important as positive space. And, finally, line is king! I agree with the Curmudgeon, line character is really important. I especially like a brushed line of varying widths. These are the things that I think make for a great comic book cover.

Welcome back moonlightiguana :)
I held back on the new GIJOE cover. It is horrendous. The standard for art is simply much lower than it was in the 1960s and 70s. Funny thing, there are some great artists working today, but I don't understand how Joe Quesada praise John Cassaday and someone like Mark Bagley in the same breath. Is he joking? Or Dan DiDio, gives us Frank Quitely, then follows up with Philip Tan. Wha--?

I'm sorry, but I think the dude in the hat is a douche. Manga-hater....

Ah, no need to resort to name-calling. The Curmudgeon has his views, but he does not look down on people that don't share them.
