@randacnam, fantome is right on work principal, whilst certain wire types are safe for direct inground installation, it's a good practice to use electrical conduit. It's cheap and used less for maximising cable sheath life but more for ensuring you don't sever it with a shovel.
Use PVC pipe or conduit to your romex when you put them in the ground. Don't just put the wire in the dirt like he did unless the lights are temporary.
