Takin calves at Saint Louis Zoo

Mushu, a male, was born on January 31, 2009 to mother Ting, age 5. A female, Maya, was born on March 12, 2009 to mother Xie Xie, age 7. Their father is Bear, age 7.

The Sichuan takin (name rhymes with "rockin") is a little-known relative of the musk ox. This mountain dweller is native to the dense bamboo forests of northern Asia and shares its remote habitat with the giant panda. There are fewer than 70 takin managed cooperatively in North American institutions. Only 16 institutions work with this species.

At the Zoo, they share their habitat with the Indian muntjac and the Chinese goral.
