Willard Robison & His Orchestra - Just The Same (Donaldson /Burke), Pathé Actuelle 1927

NOTE: Willard ROBISON (b.1894 in Shelbina, Missouri d. 1968 in Peekskill, New York) American bandleader, pianist and composer. In the early 1920s, Robison led and toured with several territory bands in the Southwest and recorded several dozen sides in New York later in the decade as the leader of the bands named Willard Robison's Levee Loungers or the Deep River Boys. He also made several sides as part of Busse's Buzzards, a studio group led by trumpeter Harry Busse (a star soloist for Paul Whiteman's band).

Robisons songs often reflect a rural, melancholy theme - portraits of life in small-town America. Their warm style has drawn comparison to Hoagy Carmichael. Many of his songs, such as „A Cottage for Sale", „'Round My Old Deserted Farm", „Don't Smoke in Bed", „ Tain't So, Honey, Tain't So", „Deep Elm" and „Old Folks" have become standards and have been recorded by jazz and pop artists such as Nina Simone, Peggy Lee, Nat King Cole and Mildred Bailey. His 1929 composition "A Cottage for Sale" (lyric by Larry Conley) became his best-known, with over 100 performances and popular recordings by Guy Lombardo (in 1930) and Billy Eckstine (in 1945). In 1962, his old friend Teagarden recorded „Think Well of Me", a full album of Willard Robison songs.

  • Another great example of this great but underrated group; I love those pictures too!

  • What fun! And though all the images are appealing, I especially like that "blue" painting at 2:54. Wish I could paint something like that.

  • Nice bio notes and I liked the trio--you never hear harmony singing nowadays and it's charming.

  • Great - a new name to look for in orchestras - but he has a good one.....no ocomment on the trio......

  • HOTSY TOTSY and SUPER JAZZY! Love the video and all the Lazy Hazy Days of Summer photos espcially the couple at 1:30 in front of the tent. G, I want it to be SUMMER! :-) Thank you.
