What is the genetic significance of the stickleback? Peter Gabriel mentions it in a song about reproduction (that's how I got here).

@ewetyube Phil and Andrew could explain this much better than I could, but I think they have become an important model genetic organism mostly because of a rapid evolutionary radiation that they underwent after the last ice-age in diverse environments, including both fresh and saltwater. This can let you study how separated populations adapt to similar environmental changes, for example. Do they evolve through the same genetic mechanisms or different ones?
