GOLD - Carl Lewis, USA 8.54 (28-0 1/4)
SILVER - Gary Honey, AUS 8.24 (27-0 1/2)
BRONZE - Giovanni Evangelisti, ITA 8.24 (27-0 1/2)

This was Lewis' first jump. It surpassed 28 feet and won the gold medal by nearly a foot, despite lack of much reaction from Lewis or ABC announcers Al Michaels and Dwight Stones.

Lewis took only one more jump, a foul. He passed in subsequent rounds, confident his mark would hold up and determined to save energy for the 200 and relay. The Coliseum crowd didn't appreciate it, and booed, putting Lewis on the defensive in subsequent interviews.

Note: The ABC graphic at the end of this video erred on the silver and bronze medalists, who tied at 8.24. Honey won the silver based on longer second best mark of 8.18
