@jusjosh21 You probably don't let them play outside either, out of fear they may be bitten by West Nile mosquitoes. Better they experience the world through TV and video games. Enjoy your zombie children, jeesh!

OMG OMG THERE ARE SOME STUPID PEOPLE OUT THERE AFRAID OF SNOW CAVES,LMAO Jeez people Ive lived all my life growing up and playing in snow caves as a kid in Illinois never once has a snow cave collapsed and killed anyone if it collapses stand up and your outside again . Amazes me just how dumb some people are you'd think they have led a sheltered life and never experienced actual fun in their life's .

BE VERY CAREFUL
A few degrees change in temp can collapse a snow tunnel. Kids usually hit the sides of the walls or the top of snow caves also. Which can collapse a snow cave/tunnel easily
If you make the tunnels TOO long you may be to late to dig them out. Straight up truth
Humans pass out from lack of oxygen in around 2 min and die in around 5 min. If you cannot reach that person in less than 30 sec to 1 min and dig them out within that 30 sec to 1 min the snow cave is to big and or to long

dangerous--In my town a kid was killed when the tunnel collapsed and parents werent around

This is a very effective survival shelter, actually very cozy with a good sleeping bag.

@lilosa1 Every year i look on the news and see that some kid died from a snow tunnel collapse. Snow is ALOT heavier than it seems.

@luckyj224
You make a big pile and let it sit for a bit, best if snow is at packing temperature (does it make a nice compact snowball?) Your using the snow's own weight to pack it together.
Then you just dig out a hole, and keep digging. See other comments for how I dug it. It needs to be about a foot thick. Poke sticks in it from outside to warn if your getting thin. Any thicker and you start facing more serious issue in event of collapse, of course keep an eye on the kids.
