http://www.euronews.net/ An oil spill is threatening one of the most pristine jewels in New Zealand's crown of natural wonders; the Bay of Plenty.
A Liberian-flagged container ship, the Rena, ran aground on the Astrolabe reef on Wednesday, and there are now fears it could break in half, releasing nearly 2,000 tons of fuel oil. The 30 tons leaked so far have formed a slick five kilometres long.
Heavy weather is forecast for Monday, which would halt the salvage operation to pump the fuel off the ship, and could break its back.
This just leaves me speechless...

Lack of Planning = No Response.
They should have had that ship that collects oil out of the sea. Especially now NZ is soon to be oil drilling of the east coast

update: **hundreds** of tonnes have now leaked
the ship has now shifted, listing in the opposite direction at 15degrees.
the hull is badly damaged, cargo is spilling
worst case scenario looms large
cutting a corner at top speed ignoring the lighthouse flashes, unbelievably
irresponsible.
devastating for the Bay, an incredibly complex and pristine habitat. not only a jewel for NZ, but for the world.
