La novena puerta (1999), dirigida por Roman Polanski, es un neo-noir, thriller de terror, misterio sobre el negocio de libros raros, donde raras librero Dean Corso (Johnny Depp) es contratado por el bibliófilo Boris Balkan (Frank Langella) para validar diecisieteava copia del siglo de Las Nueve Puertas del Reino de las sombras, por Aristide Torchia, y lo que encuentra en el camino.
