This is a cutaway of a rotary engine from a single-engine Gnome N-9 plane made between the world wars. From the Air Force Museum in Dayton, OH. I don't know if I'm using the terminology right, but it looks like nine cylinders with radiating fins are branching out from the center, each cylinder with its own piston inside and all piston connected at the center so as to move sequentially.
