After the collapse of Soviet communism, Bulgarian wine growers and exporters began work on a new strategy to improve their products' image abroad and their income from exports to the West. The communists had concentrated on mass production of cheap wine for export to the Soviet Bloc, and the prices paid were low. Now the focus shifted to cultivating fine vintages with the aim of selling quality rather than quantity to the European Union. But it would be a 15-year process. This video is part of a series documenting Eastern Europe's transition from communism to capitalism. Filmed in January 1996.
