Iridium Flares - What Was That?
Beginning in 1998, a network of 66 communication satellites called Iridium was launched into orbit. At any given time, at least one of them is above the horizon for any location on Earth (not counting the territory around the north and south poles). Sometimes, as an Iridium satellite moves across the sky, sunlight bounces off its antennas and solar panels, creating a brief but brilliant Iridium flare.
