The truth is that Israel is not the (or even "a") defining issue in this election, and that is because the candidates more or less agree on the defense of the Jewish state. Neither Obama nor McCain (Hillary's views are insignificant now) propose that Israel negotiate with Hamas, and that is because they both grasp the real intentions and aims of this band of terrorists. Now, I happen to know quite a lot of hawkish Israelis who wouldn't be averse to testing what Israel might get from Hamas in discussions, at least temporarily. One of these is Efraim Halevi, the former head of the Mossad, a hard-headed realist...the Hillary folk tried to spread panic that Obama was derelict on Israel, and derelict, at best. Now the McCain folk are trying to do the same, with slightly more desperation...I believe that most Palestinians want the destruction or disintegration of Israel, and that is certainly the palpable goal of Hamas. For the moment, it can only lodge rockets and missiles from Gaza. Surrender enough territory in the West Bank, and Tel Aviv and the Ben Gurion Airport will be in range. In any case, Haifa will once again be in range of Hezbollah since the stupid cease-fire negotiated by Condi Rice two years ago at the Security Council...One criticism I have heard from pro-Israel folk is that Obama's statement ("Nobody is suffering more than the Palestinian people") is insensitive to the people of Israel. Please. It is the Palestinians who are suffering, really suffering, and Obama is correct to say this. And that's another reason why the Palestinian leadership has been and still is a criminal leadership: it has been taking the Arabs of Palestine and is still taking the Arabs of Palestine towards nowhere.

'It is sad President Bush would use a speech to the Knesset on the 60th anniversary of Israel's independence to launch a false political attack,' Democrat Barack Obama accused President George W. Bush on Thursday of launching a "false political attack" with a comment about appeasing dictators. The Democratic presidential candidate interpreted the remark as a slam against him but the White House denied that the comment was in any way directed at Obama. In a speech to Israel's Knesset, Bush said that "some seem to believe we should negotiate with terrorists and radicals, as if some ingenious argument will persuade them they have been wrong all along ... We have an obligation to call this what it is - the false comfort of appeasement, which has been repeatedly discredited by history."

But whatever the blatant utility of its timing, the Syrian-Israeli announcement prompted a rash of writings on the prospects of a Golan-Heights-for-peace deal..."the Golan Heights would turn into a radical spearhead against Israel" with forces amassing there "from Iran, Afghanistan and elsewhere" and "life in the north [of Israel] turn[ing] into an unbearable nightmare" of terror attacks. Meanwhile the Bush administration [doesn't recognize] the fact that since adopting the cause of Mahmoud Abbas's Fatah terror organization, also as an alleged peace partner for Israel—even though, for instance, it gives Palestinian kids the identical education as Hamas—the Bush administration has been a major encourager of Israel's own ongoing "peace" pathology of courting and rewarding terrorists and despots...Israel would be giving up something very tangible, the strategic Heights, Syria—an example par excellence of the volatile, fractious Arab Middle East—would be giving promises, promises, easily trampled and forgotten...Egyptian Sinai continues to serve as a weapons conduit from Iran to Hamas...Egypt's Culture Minister Farouk Hosni said he would "burn Israeli books himself" if they were found in Egyptian libraries...Jordan, with which Israel signed a peace treaty in 1994...examples of blood-curdling anti-Semitic material in the Jordanian press including the partly government-owned Al-Dustur. Israel didn't, at least, make any significant land concessions to Jordan, and as Bechor points out, "the Sinai Peninsula is so large that the situation there is always reversible...Yet with Syria the situation will be different: from an empty buffer zone, the Golan Heights will turn into a crowded anti-Israel region for generations to come." The basic problem—one that neither Olmert nor Bush has the guts to look at—is that the Arab Middle East remains intensely hostile to Israel. That means keeping Israel both viable and a formidable, valuable U.S. ally requires strengthening it and not turning its remaining strategic assets into a clearance sale for hostile parties. At this late date, it's a lesson still not learned.

  • President Carter got the peace prize too. You know Obama was nominated for the Nobel Peace prize twelve days after taking office. Upon acceptance of winning it, Obama was praised by the committee, "extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy". . They also gave the peace prize to Yasser Arafat, the leader of the PLO, the best known terrorist organization on the globe. This is like giving it to David Duke, the former Grand Wizard of the KKK.

  • @il9agr17

Hamas thousands of rocket and mortar attacks targeting Israeli civilians is documented everywhere from Wikipedia to the US State Department. As are Hamas suicide attacks targeting suicide attacks. Your blatant lies do little to advance your personal credibility or the religious/political objectives of Hamas.

  • @slayerkendra ignorant, i bet ure american, hamas does not target innocent people, and does not let palestine down. they stand strong in front of fucked up israelis and defend palestine, their wives, and their children. they give their lives for their land. americans on the other hand support israel, give them weapons to destroy innocent people, and invade iraq, (im not saying anything about afghanistan cuz they really have a problem there). clearly americans are more of terrorists than hamas

  • @il9agr17 if hamass is not a terrorist group then i am the queen of england you dumb ass

  • @slayerkendra hamas is not a terrorist group

  • @TheRivetthead

Yeah, and your right hand is really your left hand...

  • The way to get the attention of Hamas and to show them that you are serious is to take their prisoners and televise an execution every hour until they release Gilad Shalit. If they choose to kill him, then we kill ALL of their prisoners.

No more swapping dead bodies of one Israeli for live terrorists by the dozens. And we see that Obama does not talk to the terrorists who control portions of Arizona.

US is inconsistent and that is why no one takes her seriously in the Islamic world.

  • Jews will survive and prosper. We always do.
