You can get a lamp dimmer at any hardware store to adjust a heating pad. You could also use those on lamps. I wouldn't use any of those stick on thermometers. Just get you a digital and use it where ever you want. They are not super accurate. It will cost same The one I am talking about is accurate within a degree or so. Do you have a Walmart near you? I can tell you exactly what to get. Hardware stores have them too. Yeah those hides will do for now. You may want to look into less open hides.
