I bought a pack of chinese flying lanterns, and tested the rice paper lamp. It flew at least 100 metres up in the sky before it burned out.
Next test...five lanterns simultaneously.

I agree. There is no way anyone can mistake a sky lantern for a ufo. Ufos can make rapid lateral movements and other fancy turns, whereas sky lanterns move only very slowly, and then extinguish themselves when they run out of fuel.

It doesn't flicker on and off visible from a distance. UFO's do. Some turn off completely even in the clear night sky, they go off completly and turn back on. The chinese lanturns lights are constant until they burn out.
