MOUNT VERNON, N.Y.
March 2, 1993
Dr. Lenas Kakkouras left his Queens apartment last Friday night and drove toward Yonkers to pick up a co-worker for their first date.
Dr. Kakkouras made a wrong turn and got lost in this city on the Yonkers border. Dr. Kakkouras was shot twice, in the shoulder and chest, by Anthony Rozzi a plainclothes Mount Vernon police detective who said Dr. Kakkouras was trying to run him over after having struck his partner, the police said.
The 30-year-old medical resident, who came to the United States from Cyprus two years ago, was pronounced dead just before midnight. In the hospital, they refused him medical attention. This event took place shortly after the first World Trade Center bombing. It was thought at the time, Dr.Kakkouras was profiled as a terrorist.
The shooting has touched off outraged cries of police brutality from Dr. Kakkouras's friends in New York's close-knit Greek-Cypriot community, who contend that the doctor, a gentle man known for his sympathetic ministering to handicapped children, was not capable of the violent actions that the police described. But the Mount Vernon Police Commissioner, John DeLeo, said the officers had acted properly in dealing with a man who was behaving irrationally and dangerously. 'Couldn't Kill a Fly'
Damn! He was probably a swarthy looking guy so they assumed he was one of us, a minority, and took him out. I hope the bitch who did this gets life since I know how much they love cops in prison and prison is hell for an EX cop!
