  • Toshiko Akiyoshi is an acclaimed composer and jazz pianist, a major figure actually (14 Grammy nominations from 1976 to 1994, and won many other awards). A documentary of her life was made called JAZZ IS MY NATIVE LANGUAGE (1984).

  • These people had more class in their little finger than all the Hollywood and tv stars today put together. Did you see how well they dressed? Did you see the courtesy Arlene showed that rather shy young lady from Japan? Why have we lost dignified, urbane, polite, correct speech in last 50 years? What happened?

  • It may have been tough having to do a show the night after Fred Allen passed away, but I applaud them for having made it through the episode just the way Fred Allen would have liked it.

  • Thanks for uploading this.

  • Steve Allan was good in his own right, he too was very smart and witty, but did not have Fred Allan's fast-paced patter. I always loved F. Allan's description of himself: that he had a face "made for radio!"

  • It must have been tough on the cast having only a day to try and cope with Fred's death before the broadcast. Too bad John accidently said "Steve" instead of "Fred" at the end...

  • Wow, Toshiko Akiyoshi will be 80 in December. Plenty of great recordings of her on youtube.

  • And some of her music is on a Mosaic Records set along with her husband, tenor saxist, Lew Tabakin.

  • I have speculated in other places on YouTube that WML producers should have hired a permanent 4th panelist after Allen's death. Well... WML would have lost many memorable moments with guest panelists if they had. Steve Allen G_T he would stay with WML only until his night time show went on national network. Wonder why? Arlene and John had no problems moonlighting from their other network commitments to play the game 10:30 pm Sundays. Kilgallen and Cerf probably were just as busy as well.
